D.light Design
D.light design is a startup company dedicated to providing safe, bright light to people currently dependent on kerosene as their exclusive source of light. Safe, bright light has immense implications for income generation and education for D.light's rural poor customers.
D.light's current products include affordable, innovative solar-powered LED lights that are being marketed in India and Africa. One of D.light's founders, Ned Tozun is a River member and Ned's wife Dorcas Cheng-Tozun served on The River's staff as the Compassion Coordinator. Ned and Dorcas are both currently working in d.light's Shenzhen, China office.
The River helped start D.light design by contributing funding for a needs-assessment trip as the company was being launched. We are proud to be part of D.light's mission to "replace every kerosene lantern in the world with high quality and affordable light and power solutions, thereby providing everyone access to a basic human need: safe and bright light"
As of December 2008 D.light has
- Officially launched their product line that features two different product series of solar lights
- Received antoher round of venture investment
- Rapidly increased sales in the last months, with market tests ongoing throughout the world. D.light has reached 10s of thousands of families in 2008 and hope to reach 100s of thousands in 2009.
- Recently opened a third international office in Tanzania, Africa - in addition to our offices in India and China - which will focus on East Africa sales
- Over 40 employees in 4 countries and 3 continents!
