Rays of Hope (Visual Art)

Posted by Denise Tsang on Feb 09, 2016

By Denise Tsang, Copic sketch marker and pencil The last two months have felt like a whirlwind. From full-blown yelling matches with parents to a friend's abrupt decision to leave our ministry team, I felt completely helpless and at the mercy of circumstances beyond...

Pruning My Soul

Posted by Marie Fang on Feb 02, 2016

My husband, Daniel, and I just bought a house six months ago. We’ve found several areas of our new home that we’d like to improve, including the landscaping. On first look, we have a lovely enough backyard: a patio for seating and dining, a nice patch of grass surrounded by...

Seeking Out Friendship

Posted by Molly Meyer on Jan 19, 2016

This story starts with my stalking another family. Last spring, our neighbors in the house to our left moved out without saying goodbye. It wasn't much of a surprise. We’ve lived in our home for over eight years. During most of that time, an elderly lady and her adult...

Resolving to Do More of the Same This New Year

Posted by Grace Lynch on Jan 12, 2016

I have always loved the beginning of the year. Not for the confetti throwing or champagne drinking of New Year’s Eve, but for the idea of a fresh start and all the possibilities that lay ahead for the future. Crash diets, spring cleaning, and goal setting… Bring it...

My Mom's Gift of Scripture

Posted by Rick Schertle on Dec 22, 2015

I remember the call I got seventeen years ago like it was yesterday. In our upstairs apartment in an old Victorian on Third Street in downtown San Jose, I was drained of emotion after my parents informed me that my mom had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. I knew enough...

The Slow Work of God

Posted by Michelle Manley on Dec 08, 2015

This fall I read the book Renew Your Life by Kai Mark Nilsen. It was a book club selection—not a personal favorite, but one with stirring thoughts nonetheless. One of the book’s more thought-provoking themes was the idea of “the slow work of God.” After...

Building Community One Meal at a Time

Posted by Lorianne Lee on Dec 01, 2015

I don’t know about you, but my experiences with church community have been mixed. I didn’t grow up in the church, so my only real experience of it has been at The River. I’ve been part of the church for sixteen years, but I often feel like an outsider looking in...

In My Own Skin

Posted by Kuimeuy Wang on Nov 24, 2015

I flopped into the familiar orange, speckled armchair in my spiritual director’s living room and grabbed the glass of water on the end table. There were already hints of the coming advent season in her décor. A candle sat next to a nativity scene painting mounted on a...

Takes One to Change One

Posted by Kyle Guerrero on Nov 10, 2015

I was stumped the other day when a speaker at a Club Beyond staff conference asked, "Who was the highest-ranking living person in their military career?” As the Jeopardy music played in my head, I thought it might be Dwight D. Eisenhower or George Washington. They were highly...

Laboring to Build Community

Posted by Alex Ly on Nov 03, 2015

Community is something that’s difficult to come by in Silicon Valley. My early years as a Christian, during which I spent a majority of my time on a tight college campus, were rooted in community. My closest friends were walking distance (or biking distance, in UC Davis...

Estuary: a body of water with one or more streams flowing into it and a connection to the open sea

Estuaries is a public space for individuals who call The River their home to express and reflect on their own personal stories of God in their lives. We recognize that we are each a work in progress, and that our spiritual journeys are as unique and diverse and that through sharing our stories, we hope to recognize, celebrate, reflect on, and lament the joys and struggles of following Jesus.
