Still Waters

During a Yosemite photography workshop in 2013, two fellow participants and I spent an unguided afternoon in search of new landscapes. We ended up by a slow-moving stretch of the Merced River, and my companions set up their tripods facing it. I wandered further downstream and happened upon this idyllic autumn scene.

I named the image “Still Waters,” since it reminded me of Psalm 23:2-3: “He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” I love the mountains framing the background, like sentries guarding the silence and glassy reflections, keeping out the world’s noise and chaos.

As I revisit this scene today while meditating on Psalm 23, I’m aware of what I urgently need from my Good Shepherd in this season: restful stillness, a restored soul, guidance, discipline, protection, shalom and provision. I find myself clinging to King David’s closing declaration: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:6).
