Worship Director Search Process

We are currently in the process of finding a Worship Director to fill the void left by Celebration Pastor Krista-Dawn Kimsey who will be leaving The River at the end of this year. A search committee was formed in September for us to corporately discern whom God may be calling to fill this role. The committee is comprised of members of our church congregration who represent the diverse make-up of The River. In an effort to keep the congregation informed about the search process, we have created this blog which we will update regularly. Feel free to contact any of the committee members below if you have any questions, concerns, or if you have a candidate you would like to recommend for the position.

Dear River friends,

I am very pleased to announce that I have extended an official offer for our worship director position to Esther Cho. I spoke with her on the phone this morning and she was eager to accept our offer. My anticipation is that she will begin no later than mid-March. Details will follow in the upcoming weeks.

Numerous people in our community have thanked me for what has felt like a very healthy and unifying process. It is very clear to me that our capacity to walk through the process together, as members of one another, is the fruit of the peacemaking journey on which God has led us. So, thanks to all of you who made a healthy process possible by expressing your perspective in words seasoned with grace. And thanks be to God for his goodness and provision.

I continue to ask your prayers for the unity of our church community during this season of transition.

Grace and peace,
Brad Wong,
Lead Pastor

Well, it has been a long time since we've updated this blog. It has not been because we are not busy though! The committee has met almost weekly since November to review, discuss, and interview candidates. We are pleased to announce that we have three candidates who will be moving forward to the next stage of the process - leading worship on Sunday morning. The candidates are:

January 10 - Michelle Markwart Deveaux

January 17 - Esther Cho

January 24 - Luke Haythorpe

After service each of these Sundays, there wil be a Q&A Luncheon in the Ohlone room for you to get to know the candidates better. There will also be an online form if you wish to provide your feedback to the committee.

We are excited for how the Spirit has led each of these gifted individuals to our community. We continue to ask for your prayer as we discern who the Lord would have for our next Worship Diretor.

At today's meeting, the committee reviewed all the resumes and audio/video recordings we have received thus far. There are several candidates who we determined will not be a good fit for the position for a variety of reasons. However, there are many candidates who we will continue to pursue. We are honestly surprised by the amount of interest in the position, with new resumes received almost daily. Sometimes it's easy to forget that each of the candidates are not just names on a page, but that they each have a story of why they are applying to this position. Please pray that God would give each of these people discernment on what is next for them, just as He would give us discernment on who should fill our worship director position.

There is much acitivity these days for the Worship Director Search committee. At our last meeting on October 27th, we were encouraged to learn there has been a lot of interest in the position. We are currently still in the process of reviewing candidate resumes. The interview process has now been defined so we are happy to have a clear roadmap for how to proceed with each candidate. Given the large number of resumes to review, the committee plans to meet again on Thursday, November 5.

Our second meeting was held on Thursday, October 15th. The team discussed what each of us felt were the top 3 qualities we desired in a new Worship Director. Janet Yang polled the worship team and shared their feedback with the team as well. We then discussed which media avenues we would use to post the job description. We decided upon Worship Leader Magazine, ChurchJobs.net, and Craigslist. Members of the search committee also plan to call local Bay area churches to spread the word that we are looking for a Worship Director.

We have already begun to receive resumes from candidates, both from within our community and from outside our region. Mike and Brad are outlining an interview process so we can ensure that each candidate gets equal treatment. We invite you to pray that the Lord would oversee the process for each of these candidates as the pre-screening and interviewing gets underway!
