Small Group Distinctives - DRAFT

Shepherds versus Facilitators

At The River, we believe that biblical small groups are defined not by a single meeting once a week led by a facilitator but by life together throughout the week— a community shaped by a small group shepherd who leads and gathers the flock.  It is our hope that River small groups are a place where every member is known, challenged and encouraged.

Small Group Oversight

The Small Group staff team is led by Mark Phifer-Houseman along with David Alvarez, Michelle Manley, and Tony Traback.   But the real heart of the ministry resides in the coaching volunteers and small group leaders.  Each coach oversees 1-3 small groups, and there is one small group leader for every group.  Coaches provide guidance to small group leaders and small group leaders directly lead groups.

Snapshots of Small Group Life

This year, all of our small groups went through some common curriculum on the topics of Biblical Peacemaking and Prayer.  Click for sample curriculum from the Peacemaking and Prayer studies.

A recent Flow video highlighted one small group's expression of mission.  Watch the short video here.
