Student Ministry Weekly Update June 29 - July 4

Jun 29, 2009

Dear Parents,

This last Sunday Chris Chaney taught a lesson on Judaism.  We asked the students what they already knew about Judaism, and most of them said that they only knew what they had seen on TV or movies.  We compared and contrasted Christianity with Judaism, recognizing the positive aspects of the Jewish faith, but also realizing the shortcomings.  We also did an activity to give them a better understanding of how the Jewish people felt when Jesus came.  It was interesting; ask your student about it!  Our verses this week are Luke 2:4-18 and Isaiah 53:1-7, 10-12.
Next week is going to be our last week looking at different religions.  Hopefully it has sparked good conversation in your families.  The youth have had a lot of great questions about different faiths, and even our own faith.  Beginning the 12th of July, we will have various staff members coming to share their life stories with our students.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
* Tomorrow is our on of our summer weekly activities.  You should have gotten another email with the times and information.  Please RSVP.
* You may have noticed signs outside SJSU on Sunday that said "restricted access."  The reason for this is that SJSU is using one of KC's rooms for registration, and KC is using our normal music room.  Over the summer, we will be meeting in the middle landing of the Student Union.  I realize that this is not ideal, but hopefully it will only be for the next few months.
* Our baby was due this last Saturday.  I'm trying to get as much organized as possible before Baby arrives, but I will be taking some time (1-2 weeks) of paternity leave after the birth.  Because Chris is alone on his teaching Sundays, I need somebody to help with student management.  Please let me know if you are available on or 7/12.  Those are the most probable dates that I would be out.
* Summer schedule is here!  Please notify me so that I can send you the document.  It has been very difficult to finalize the outreaches that I would like to do, but I will be adding those as I can.  I also may add some extra weekend activities, but want to wait until I see what unfolds with my job search, and what our lives are like with the new baby (and when she actually arrives).  Please understand if I have to cancel an event or two to help Amy out.  However, if you are able to help with any of the events, please let me know.  I need planners and chaperones.  I may be hunting you down!

* As you know, I have 2 months before my hours are reduced.  Amy and I are looking into a few different possibilities, but the reality is that finding a well-paying part-time job is difficult.  I feel like it is necessary for me to also look at full-time jobs, but my hope is to stay at The River.  I will keep you posted.
PRAYER:
* Jesse and Wil Balch are leaving early Sunday morning for Hawaii.  They are not going on vacation, but actually attending YWAM's Infusion Youth Camp from July 5th - 19th.  Please keep them in your prayers.  If you are interested in learning more about the camp, click on this link .
